Spectacle lenses that change color depending on the intensity and amount of UV rays are called photochromic. While these lenses become transparent with the decrease of UV rays indoors, they darken when exposed to the sun.

It would not be correct to define photochromic spectacles as “sunglasses” in the full sense, due to their darkening in the external environment. Because while sunglasses are the same color and dark in every environment and under every light, the intensity of darkening in the color of photochromic lenses changes depending on many factors. Suggesting users to use photochromic lenses “instead of” sunglasses is not the right approach. However, photochromic spectacles have a darkening function that can be considered an alternative to sunglasses in the outdoor environment. For this reason, the advantages of photochromic lenses with their darkening function should be explained to the users very well and clearly by opticians.

The rate of color change of photochromic lenses by exposure to different external conditions varies not only with the amount and intensity of light, but also depending on whether the light is direct or reflected, the temperature, the environment, different times of the day and the geography. For this reason, it is necessary not to pair photochromic lenses with sunglasses that always stay the same dark regardless of external conditions.

At this point, photochromic lenses, thanks to the dimming function in the environment where the light increases in amount and intensity, often support the wearer to continue to work comfortably with the same spectacles instead of taking off their eyeglasses and using a separate sunglasses. In the same way, the color of the lens will lighten when it enters the interior or when the light decreases in the outdoor environment, so you will not have to change your eyeglasses again. For this reason, using photochromic lens is very practical for many users. However, it should be clearly explained to the user that this does not mean using photochromic spectacles instead of sunglasses.

Photochromic spectacles darken under the influence of direct sunlight when going outdoors, and some darkening occurs on the lenses of the eyeglasses when the user is in the car. However, due to the UV filtering feature on the windows of the vehicles, the darkening will not be at the same rate as outdoors.

The most important reason why users of prescription eyeglasses that correct refractive errors prefer photochromic lenses is that they can easily use these lenses in sunny weather and when they are in the car. Instead of carrying prescription sunglasses, many people prefer to wear single spectacles without constantly changing lenses with their photochromic lenses that darken and open when the environment changes. Photochromic lenses, which also protect their eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays, are ideal especially for users who are affected by the sun and are uncomfortable, and provide them with a clearer vision and ease of use.

Different photochromic spectacles can be used according to the user's needs. There may be photochromic lenses that provide single vision, as well as bifocal (bifocal) lenses that provide bifocal vision or multifocal (multifocal) chromatic lenses that provide multifocal vision.

Photochromic eyeglasses are especially ideal for users who enter and exit a lot between indoor and outdoor.
